Not all incarnations of BC have the canary cry. The golden age version didn't. The present version lost it for years and only recently got it back. Black Canary doesen't necessarily equal sonic powers. I think her primary powerset is martial arts anyway. (not that martial arts is a literal superpower but y'know). I actually don't think she needs the canary cry to work. As I said, she got on fine without it for years, on and off.

............

this was in a thread about the anime-style DC Direct heroine figures. I really should put 'anime-style' in inverted commas because as usual with anime style things not done by actual real live Japanese people they just don't work for some reason. (It's not all about the big eyes people! There is more to it than the big eyes! Yes. There's also really tiny little mouths lol111!!!!111 etc)

Anyway, the Black Canary design is a ninja with a ninja mouth covering thingy. (you can tell I'm an anime fangirl because I use the proper technical term). Someone said wouldn't this impede her canary cry? A not unreasonable point. So I pointed out that Black Canary doesn't necessarily equal sonic screams.

The canary cry is okay. But the character doesn't really need it. She even doesn't need the fishnets. Like the canary cry, they were dropped for years too. I do like the fishnets. They're cool. They went out of fashion in 1943, but that's okay. Dinah is a leader of fashion, not a follower.

So like, nerr.

The faux-anime ninja Dinah doesn't have fishnets either. I have absolutely nothing witty or interesting to say about that fact. But it is nice to see that you can do designs for characters and not use every single iconic element every time. (like Batman and Superman always have to have the same basic design, because they sell underwear to 8 year olds. That's dull.)

Not that there's anything wrong with selling underwear to 8 year olds. Someone's got to do it. And rather them than me. Not actually existing is a blessing, sometimes.

So I'm watching Sharpe. A. is very keen on it so I've seen a lot of it recently. And I'm looking at it and thinking, wait haven't I seen this before?

In every episode the blushing, be-empire line cleavaged wife of an effete high born officer (said officer hates Sharpe for being common and vulgar) gets kidnapped by some southern European bounders who say 'rah' for Napoleon. And because the effete husband is too much of a dishonorable coward to rescue her, Sharpe always ends up doing it. And then there is Romantic Tension between he and the rescued wife. Because he is more of a man than the effete officer husbands who don't like Sharpe but are too scared to rescue thier wives so he has to do it for them.

And is it me or is this every episode? Because I think I've seen this plot done in this programme about 4 times already.

Hmmmm.

I've seen the final version of the Manapul Legion picture at Newsarama (I think it was)and I'm disappointed to see that they have succumbed to the Saturn Girl Must Wear Pink disease. Nooooooooooooo! I thought the new design looked great in red and white! It really sang!

In pink and white-it merely looks okay. But it's flat. For some reason the pink/white combination just doesn't pop the way the red/white one does. Darnit. I wish every new (or new/old?) generation of Legion creators wouldn't keep putting Imra back in pink. It doesn't fit her personality and it just doesn't look as good.

Now Element Lad, he should be back in pink! It looked good on him. Who cares if it's supposedly not a manly colour? I like it on him.

Not crazy to see the return of the dreaded L belts so soon after we were finally liberated from them. Sigh. And I say this as someone who really loved the Sprouse designs when they first came out lo, those many years ago.

But the L belts are in the past. Time to leave them behind and do something new. (new/old?) Going back to them yet again seems like such a backwards step.

Oh and I much prefer the Kitson design for Phantom Girl. It's a shame to lose that one so soon. (I wasn't sure about it at first, but it grew on me.)

Subject:Shooter-new old Legion writer !
Time:12:09 am
Current Mood:nostalgicnostalgic
Well Jim Shooter didn't get distracted by a shiny penny after all. He's going to be the next Legion writer and though I have an instinctive distrust of going back to the past, I'm pretty hopeful about it. Yay. When I was musing that maybe he would have written the Legionnaires as geometric shapes debating philosophy for 30 issues I was, I must confess kinda confusing him with Steve Ditko, who would do that sort of thing.

Some Legion fan/historian I am! Ha.

Reading the Newsarama interview, it actually sounds pretty good. I think this could be the first time in a long time when the Legion actually gets it right again. I hope so!

The reasons he has got this gig are because-a. ever since the original Crisis, DC has struggled to make the LSH work, and the Legion has floundered. Two reboots didn't work, a half arsed reintroduction of the modern Superboy didn't work. Nothing worked. They're desperate. The Legion is potentially a very valuable property. (and it's finally starting to meet its modern commercial potential with the cartoon). They don't want to save it just because Paul Levitz has a great affection for it (though that helps). They're so desperate they will offer a job to Jim Shooter, industry pariah.

oh and b-the generation of writers/artists/ that Shooter alienated and who hate his guts rather more than Dr Doom ever did Reed Richards? Lo, time has passed, and most of them are now out of comics, or are no longer in positions of power or influence. The Shooter comeback that would once have been vetoed is now greenlighted.

Hopefully, as a writer rather than an editor, he won't alienate a whole new generation of comics people! I say this because Shooter is a much better writer than editor. We lost his talent for a generation because he was tactless and didn't 'play the game' with the internal politics of the comics business. I wouldn't want to lose it again.

He may have pissed off the people he dealt with personally, but as a fan, I love reading his interviews. He's very good value. And he's honest. So many interviews are ra ra ra I love artist x's work and I'm thrilled to be working with him when in reality they think artist x sucks. It's nice when you know the person is telling the truth. Unfortunately that doesn't win friends and influence people.

It amuses me no end though! But then I don't have to work for him. Ha.

Daughters are indeed named after mothers, though it is not as common a practice as it used to be. (when the name stock was much smaller and when commemorating relatives was a much more common reason for bestowing names other than just liking the sound of them)

Saying 'oh only men do that because they are vain and are dicks because they are men' is very insulting to men. (and I am a woman) and then you say 'don't give me any examples which disprove my assertion because they are weird neener neener'.

Basically you are saying even if you prove me wrong I'm going to ignore it la la la.

It's based on a fundatmentally untrue assertion and just saying 'those people are weird' does not make it any less untrue. Daughters do get named after mothers. It happens in real life. Your position is not that the practice is non-existent, it is that you don't like it.

You don't actually get to dismiss things you don't like by denying their existence. Especially when they do actually exist...

that was a response to this-

http://absorbascon.blogspot.com/2007/09/least-likely-to-change-black-canary-and.html

That really bugged me. Daughters are named after thier mothers! It happens! The fact that she just glibly says 'no one does that' really annoys me. Actually people do do that, just a bit less often than they used to. I can totally buy someone in the 1950s (when I think Dinah II was born at least originally, sliding timeline be damned!) doing the 'name children after the parent' thing', the 'junior' tradition that is nearly moribund now was still quite strong then.

Oh that did annoy me.

FWIW, I actually agree with her main point, that Black Canary II is for all intents and purposes the same character as BC I. The daughter retcon only came about because someone belatedly noticed that Dinah was still around 28-32 when she should have been in her fifties. Now it's nothing that an encounter with some age-slowing mystical doodah wouldn't have solved but Gerry Conway for some reason chose to make her the daughter with her mother's memories.

When I read that back issue as a kid, my first thought was-"oh my god. Dinah remembers doing it with her Dad. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW"

Gerry Conway appears never to have given any thought to this.

Those whacky comic book writers.

Amazing how the response from the Neanderthal brigade is always 'You're fat and jealous neener nee nee'. Drawing women in a realistic fashion doesn't always automatically mean fat. In fact sometimes realistic means skinny. As in skinny with small breasts like....real skinny women have. But then again the Neanderthals always think anyone who doesn't look like a cartoon pornstar is 'fat'. (which is to say, I've lost count of the times on the Internet when perfectly normal and not overweight at all women have been called 'fat disgusting pigs' and suchlike. And I'm like are we seeing the same person here?)

And the second argument is always 'comics are meant for horny teenage boys get over it.' As a matter of fact, traditionally comics were mostly read by children of both sexes (although there were some older fans). If you look at the lettercols of Silver Age issues of Adventure Comics and Wonder Woman, or any title you like you see as many female names as male ones. Although there aways was some cheesecake, it wasn't all there was. Unlike now. No, comics aren't necessarily just for horny teenage boys. Why on earth should one group of potential readers be alienated and excluded?

When Tommy Neanderthal says "I bet you're all fat disgusting hippos lol1!!!11!!!' he means " I bet you would reject me in real life like all the other real bitches. The comic book women are my friends. They would let me fuck them and would take it up the arse and then make my dinner unlike the real women who are bitches"

When he says 'comics are for horny teenage boys stop whining' he means-"I am so insecure that any suggestion that a demographic other than my own would partake in my hobby would mean that I would be unmanned, emasculated, the one area of dominance in which I can feel supreme-taken from me, taken from me, the manly manly penis owning manly man who has a penis and is manly. Unmanned. By the bitches. The bitches who won't fuck me. Nooooo noooo please Mommy don't take that from me too, I'll be a good boy, noooo nooo Mommy not the cupboard.......No Daddy I am manly and masculine and strong and I really have a penis.....no don't hit me again noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. "

Something like that.

Watching the first episode of Doremi Sharp. The girls have just discovered a note from Majo Rika who has gone away saying I'm sorry I didn't say goodbye I'll look after the fairies etc. And the girls are all crying and like 'we didn't get to say goodbye' and they are all sad because they like, Wuvved her or something.

If that was me I would be all " Fucking Shit, now I don't have cool magical powers anymore and I can't fly on a broom and turn people into worms and all that cool shit again god dammit. YOU BITCH"

But the Ojamajos are much nicer people than I am. In Magical Girl anime, the personal relationships are always more important than the cool magical powers and nifty outfits. You notice how the girls in these things only transform when fighting the villain and then immediately change back?

If I was a character in one of these things I'd be transformed nearly all the time. I wouldn't want to go back to mundane non-magical self. I'd be wearing the magical girl outfit with the enormous dumpy bridesmaid-style Butt Bow and the sparkly tiara and the mini skirt embroidered with shiny doodahs and the mystical hair ornaments etc. in ordinary life

I would totally be hanging out wearing that shit all the time. I'd never want to change back.

I would make a very poor magical girl.

Mystery Person X has miraculously resumed the Pretty Cure Splash Star fansubs recently, which is nice. It seemed like the project was dead so I'm glad that he/she had enough enthusiasm to resume the project. A while ago someone on their blog left a really nasty message whining about them not doing any episodes for a long time. If that had been me I would have said Fuck you since you were so rude I'm not going to translate any more. Learn Japanese and do it yourself if you're so desperate for it you entitled git.

But Mystery Person X is a much nicer person than I am. Some fansub watchers get so entitled about it, it's scary. I understand the frustration of following a series that's stalled. (something like 3 years later and I'm still hoping against hope for Mermaid Melody to be completed *sigh*.) But you can't make demands like that. It's just crass.

Well Doremi fansubs released the first two episodes of Ojomajo Doremi Sharp (dunno how to do the symbol) which is great, although the story is plainly continued on from the first series, there's stuff going on that I have no idea about. Pop is upset about something for example. (I don't know what). Obviously this is meant to be viewed after the first series but I can't see the first series.

Because philistine hellspawn 4Kids 'licensed' the first series. Which is to say, they released about 5 severely edited and ahem..'loosely translated' travesties that bear about as much resemblence to the original as goat turds to fondant fancies. There are no accurately translated subbed dvds. I have no interest whatsoever in ever watching the butchered, dumbed down fake 4KidsOjamajo Doremi but because of it I am doomed to start the second series without having a damn clue what's going on.

As far as I can make out, 4Morons hasn't shown a Doremi episode for about three years or something like that and has dropped it. But we still can't have any proper subbed episodes.

Unfair!! (yeah, well it brings out the tantrumming 2 year old in me..) :P

*sigh* if it's only a crappy inaccurate badly localised DIC Sailormoon/Cardcaptors style dub it shouldn't count dammit. Unfortunately Doremi fansubs are very 'by the book' and won't do series that have even been fake-licensed (as I call the 4kids-style travesty licensings). Honobono did Tokyo Mew Mew even despite a travesty licensing. Why can't Doremi do the same? *sigh*.

So like anyway, I'm watching the first episode of Doremi Sharp and I haven't the blooming foggiest what's happening. Thanks for nothing 4Twats!
(yes that is very witty and sophisticated. Yes)

Subject:post on youtube and my anime school uniform project!
Time:04:02 pm
Man, where did you find the pictures of Berry's school uniform? I've been looking on the net for pictures of that uniform for months! Every review of that manga mentions how she transferred for the uniform but nobody ever posts a picture of it! AGH! (in fact pictures of Berry are very hard to find in general, most pages only have the scan of the manga cover again and again and again..)

Thanks for finally letting me get some visual reference for Berry's uniform so I can finally draw it! Yay.
